It is illegal to carry brass knuckles in Virginia without a concealed weapon permit. Failure to adhere to this law will result in a misdemeanor punishable by up to $2,500 in fines and up to one year in prison. Second-time offenders will face a felony charge.
Under Virginia law, you are allowed to use deadly force to defend yourself and your family when you are facing an imminent threat, whether in your home, on the street, at work, or in any location.
An exception to a rule in place in some jurisdictions that requires a defendant to retreat before using deadly force in self-defense. The castle exception states that if a defendant is in his home, he is not required to retreat prior to using deadly force in self defense.
The legal defense of self defense does not apply in situations where two persons willingly or voluntarily mutually engage in combat to "gratify their passion." Where someone is assaulted, presuming the elements of self defense are met (see above) he may defend himself.
