Sixty-four percent of lawyers are men; 36 percent are women. Among the 20 states that report race/ethnicity for the survey, the ABA said 85 percent of lawyers identify as white; 5 percent as African-American; 5 percent as Hispanic; and 3 percent as Asian.
No surprises there, perhaps, but Georgia also trails Texas, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts and Maryland. Other highights from the report: North Dakota has the fewest lawyers in practice of any state, with 1,674. Sixty-four percent of lawyers are men; 36 percent are women.
How do you check to see if an attorney has a valid bar license to practice law in a given state?
All of these directories allow you to search for the attorney by name.
Use the links below to select the state where the attorney practices law. Then go to the state bar site to search the attorney's name or bar number. On many of these directories, you can see if the license has ever been inactive or if the attorney was disciplined for misconduct.
Go to www.wsba.org and on the left hand side is the "lawyer directory." Click that and you can search by name, city, bar number, phone number, etc. If you enter city or name, it will give you all contact information, bar number, practice area and more.
Typically, the state bar association or regulatory authority will have a website with a searchable database of all of the licensed attorneys in the state.
The LAP’s Lawyers Helping Lawyers (LHL) peer-to-peer program is for Bar members who are suffering from stress, depression, addiction or other personal issues in their lives. Members who have volunteered to serve as peers are matched with those who request peer assistance through online matching based on criteria selected by the participants. To ensure confidentiality, volunteers’ names and contact information are not available on the website, only identified by peer numbers, and only CorpCare has access to the identifying information that it keeps in an encrypted database.
SOLACE is a State Bar program designed to assist any member of the legal community in Georgia who suffers serious loss due to a sudden catastrophic event, injury or illness. www.gabar.org/SOLACE
The LAP Committee is a standing committee of the State Bar of Georgia, the members of which are appointed each year by the incoming State Bar president. The LAP Committee provides consistent and valuable leadership, consultations and guidance for the Bar and the volunteers. The LAP Committee helps with the ongoing development and implementation of LAP policies and procedures, and the resolution of specific issues and concerns.
In order to put the needs of lawyers first and ensure confidentiality, the services are provided by CorpCare Associates, Inc., an independent mediation and counseling center staffed by certified and licensed mental health providers able to respond to a variety of issues.
