The Ranch was filmed on a sound stage in front of a live audience at Warner Brothers Studio stage 19 in Burbank, California. The opening sequence shows scenes from Norwood, and Ouray, Colorado, and the surrounding Ouray, and San Miguel Counties.
It stars Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson (who previously co-starred on That '70s Show) as brothers Colt and Rooster Bennett, who help run the Colorado cattle ranch owned by their father Beau ( Sam Elliott ).
Van Epperson as Father McGinty, a Priest who performs the wedding ceremony for Beau and Joanne and Peyton's baptism. Travis Case as Toby Henderson, Colt's high school classmate, who runs the neighboring Henderson Ranch. Josh Burrow as Nick, Mary's abusive ex-husband.
In April 2016, Netflix renewed The Ranch for a second season of 20 episodes, the first half of which premiered on June 16, 2017, and the second half was released on December 15, 2017.
The show takes place on the fictional Iron River Ranch, near the fictitious small town of Garrison, Colorado (population 512, as displayed on a sign in the opening credits). Dialogue places the town in southwestern Colorado (near the real town of Norwood ), about six hours from Denver by car. The series details the life of the Bennetts, a dysfunctional family consisting of two brothers, their rancher father, and his wife who owns a local bar and cannot live with him on the ranch.
The ironic thing is, is that the actor who plays Beau, Sam Elliott was born and raised in California.
Rooster Bennett played by Danny Masterson in The Ranch seemed to do his research into his costar Sam Elliott, who plays his TV dad on the show. Back in 1985 in the movie Mask, Sam Elliott wore a shirt that read "mustache rides". A clear reference to a sexual practice.
One of those is Ashton Kutcher, whose character Colt in The Ranch always wears Spokane Shock socks in each of the episodes. Which, at least, character-wise, makes the whole thing puzzling why someone from Colorado would be such a Spokane Shock fan. Though, fans of the show have to respect his effort to promote them.
After Danny Masterson, the actor who plays Rooster Bennett on the show was accused of sexual misconduct, he was fired from the show and his character was killed off much to the dismay and heartbreak of many fans.

Not a whole lot is known about Luke other than he served in the armed forces as a U.S. Army Corporal and his dad is Beau Bennett's brother.
After Part 7, fans were wondering who was in Nick’s trailer and who pulled the trigger. As it turns out, it was Heather, Mary’s daughter. She calls Colt immediately after and tells her what she did. Colt rushes back to the trailer, and he claims that Nick was already dead when he got there, which actually turns out to be true.
Colt and Abby are back together, and not only that, but they have another child on the way. This is the best way their story could end, honestly. We saw the whole will they/won’t they thing for a few seasons, so it’s good that Colt was able to get his act together, and Abby was able to see the good that was in him.
Beau and Joanne were forced to give up the Iron River Ranch and try to find a new home in Part 8. Colt saves the day and the ranch.
Maggie broke the news earlier in the final season that she was leaving the small town, selling her bar, and moving to Florida to be with her new partner. We didn’t get to see a lot of Maggie in the final season of the series. She wasn’t in the first half of the season, and then, she was not really around for some of the major scenes of Part 8.
Kutcher spoke about the end of The Ranch with Marc Maron on the latter's WTF podcast. He indicated that the show's cast and crew were given ample notification that the series was drawing to a close, which gave them time to prepare for the end of a gig that he says was well-loved by all involved. "The story was told," Kutcher said.
Like Kutcher mentioned, the advance warning of The Ranch 's impending curtain call allowed the main cast to scope out other gigs to jump into relatively seamlessly, meaning that we'll be seeing them all again fairly soon.
