The story of five friends sitting in their favorite booth at MacLaren’s, their lives unfolding in front of each other, How I Met Your Mother is heartwarming and hilarious at the same time. Some believe that HIMYM is Ted’s story. Others think that it is Marshall and Lily’s story.
Environmental LawyerMarshall always wanted to be an Environmental Lawyer, but had to work at other places when he couldn't get a job at an Environmental Law Firm. He worked shortly at Nicholson, Hewitt & West. He later took a job at Goliath National Bank. He worked at GNB for a few years but quit in The Exploding Meatball Sub.

Selar was portrayed by Suzie Plakson and was only actually seen in TNG: "The Schizoid Man", although she was referenced many times throughout the series.
Odenkirk, who was last seen as Marshall's Goliath National Bank boss Arthur Hobbs in Season 6, will reappear in Episode 2 when his corporate lawyer pseudo-represents Barney in his pre-nup negotiations with Quinn.
Arthur Hobbs was Marshall Eriksen's boss at certain points during his career as a corporate lawyer. He has a high position at Goliath National Bank as Barney can be fired by him even though Barney is in the Management Team.
Hammond DruthersHammond Druthers was the boss and ex-co-worker at the architectural firm where Ted worked.
By the end of the show, she works as an art consultant for the Captain, a job with an unknown salary that is purely based on who the individual works for. It is also important to note that fans have no knowledge of if she still does so in the flash-forwards. But either way, since everyone else's career has progressed significantly by the end of the show, as an individual, Lily still falls bottom of the money ladder of the five.
Then there is Barney. The show's most iconic and popular character is also the richest character for much of the show, having far more expensive taste and possessions due to his "shady" job.
Fans don't love all of his storylines, but Marshall has the best work ethic on How I Met Your Mother. Besides the desire to make money and be seen as a success, he's also motivated by his dreams and morals.
Ted is the voice of reason on How I Met Your Mother and his work situation is interesting. While he fails a lot, he does try to work hard, so he still has a good work ethic.
Robin has the second-best work ethic on the popular sitcom. Even when she's young and becomes the pop singer Robin Sparkles, she proves that she puts in the time required to be successful. While she might look back on that time in her life with shame and regret, she was still very young to work so hard, and that's something that she should be proud of. Robin takes on a lot of random and awful news anchor jobs because she's trying to move up in the industry, and she believes that she can find success if she just keeps trying. Robin never forgets what she wants and always keeps her eye on the prize.
Barney is a business executive who works a high paying desk job, does exactly what he wants all of the time, makes it a point not to sleep with the same girl twice, and makes no apologies for what he is .
Victoria is the first serious girlfriend Ted gets in the series. She shows up in mid-season one and stays around for most of the remaining episodes of the season until she gets a baking scholarship in Germany.
Don is introduced as Robin's new love interest after she and Barney break up and "the guy she's supposed to marry". He left after accepting the same job opportunity that Robin turned down in order to be with him.
Ted's son and daughter living in the year 2030. Currently he's subjecting them to a lengthy and needlessly detailed tale of how he met their mother.
How I Met Your Mother is a show about finding a soulmate on Manhattan. For a group of friends, Apartment 4C on the Upper West Side is home base, which is conveniently located above MacLaren's Pub where drinks flow freely. You never know if there will be a party, a sword fight, or a "Cockamouse" (a cockroach-mouse hybrid) when you walk in the door.
Living… in “The Apartment” with his best friend Ted and his fiancé Lily. Marshall and Ted were roommates in college who had little in common until they were forced to spend hours together in a car ride to and from school. After that, Marshall and Ted were nearly as inseparable as Marshall and Lily, becoming “best bros” for life. The three of them also spend a lot of time with their friends Robin and Barney, especially at MacLaren’s Pub.
Personality… polite and sensitive. Though he is arguably the kindest member of the group, he never shies away from a spirited debate, usually shouting “Lawyered!” if (well, “when”) he wins. While Marshall is a very confident person when he knows that he’s good at something, he can also be self-conscious and insecure about other things. But he loves Lily and the rest of the gang, and he would do anything for any one of them.
