Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has retained a new attorney to represent him as he appeals his conviction in the murder of George Floyd.
Keith Maurice Ellison (born August 4, 1963) is an American politician and lawyer serving as the 30th attorney general of Minnesota. A member of the Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), Ellison was the U.S. representative for Minnesota's 5th congressional district from 2007 to 2019.
"The district court case for which I intend to appeal was paid for by the Minneapolis Peace and Police Officer's Association, and I have been informed that their obligation to pay for my representation terminated upon my conviction and sentencing," Chauvin said. During trial, Chauvin's defense attorney was Eric Nelson.
Jeremiah Bey Ellison (born October 23, 1989) is an American politician and artist serving as a member of the Minneapolis City Council, representing Ward 5. Ellison is a member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party.

It's been widely reported that Chauvin's defense is backed by a $1 million Minneapolis police union fund.
Federal proceedings are still ongoing Chauvin formally announced his intention to appeal last September.
