Finance chief’s confrontational style has alienated key European finance ministers. Controversial Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis said on Monday he would step down despite his country voting “no” to demands from international lenders in a referendum.
Early on, he described the Eurogroup as “a committee built on rotten foundations.” He told The Wall Street Journal in an interview that he was being treated by eurozone officials “as a strange bird because I talk macroeconomics….It ’s astonishing to me that having a quasi-sophisticated discussion of economics is almost considered to be bad manners.”
Euclid Tsakalotos, a 55-year-old Oxford-educated economist who has been heading the country’s negotiating team in talks with the country’s international creditors, was appointed to succeed Mr. Varoufakis as finance chief and was sworn in later Monday.
