I remember well a dificult case in which I achieved a very good settlement for my client. She bitterly objected to the amount and I had to twist her arm to get her to sign a release. A few weeks later she sent me a voucher for a nice dinner for two with a note thanking me for my determination.

Only one rule should guide you in writing sympathy messages: say what you truly feel. Your clear expression of sympathy and caring for your coworker is what matters the most. Sit down at your desk as soon as you hear of the death and let your thoughts be with your coworker as you write to her. If you knew him, some kind words about him—perhaps an anecdote—would mean a lot. If you didn't know him, you could mention something special you've heard about him. You could offer to be helpful to her, perhaps by helping her with her workload the day of the funeral or memorial service. Close with warm words, such as "With deepest sympathy." Surely, a card or note to the mother would be welcomed as well.
E-mail is a immediate way to reach out and say, "I'm sorry. I'm here for you.". And unlike a phone call or a personal visit, e-mail doesn't require an immediate response from the recipient. In short, an Executor generally has as long as he or she needs to settle an estate, provided all statutory deadlines are met.
If the deceased only had a Will, it’s likely the estate will have to go through what’s known as probate. What is probate? Probate is the court proceeding that validates a Will. Keep in mind, not all estates will need to go through probate - probate laws can vary significantly depending on what state you’re in and the size of the estate. If there was a Trust set up, or if the estate is very small in value, it may avoid probate all together.
The baseline number to qualify for a simplified probate can range anywhere from $20,000 to up to $150,000 or more.
After you have what’s known as the Letters of Administration (which are granted by the courts and appoint one person or people authority to deal with an estate), you’ll want to set up a bank account. Use this account to collect money that may be owed to the deceased person (i.e. any final wages or insurance benefits).
There are other, practical things to do, too. If you didn’t live with the deceased and there is now an empty property, you should secure it by changing the locks. You want to take a detailed inventory of all his or her belongings. We’ll go more into detail about this below below, but you’re going to need to open a checking account that’s in the estate’s name - you’ll be paying for things like final bills, court costs, potential lawyer’s fees and more from this account.
If there is a Will, it must be filed in the probate court. Beneficiaries need to be notified, and if there is a Trust, any successor trustees should also be informed.
