John Grisham's new novel, Sooley, following the story of a basketball player from Africa to college and eventually the NBA, was inspired, in part, by UVA hoops alum Mamadi Diakite.
Sycamore Row is the sequel to Grisham's first novel, A Time To Kill, published in 1989 and made into a film in 1996.

A Time To KillGrisham's first novel, A Time To Kill, was published in 1989 and sold a mere 5,000 copies. But his second, The Firm, the story of a law school grad recruited by a firm with mob connections, spent a spectacular 47 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list. Once Grisham started writing, he never stopped.
“Sycamore Row” is a true literary event — the sequel, nearly a quarter-century later, to “A Time to Kill,” Grisham's first and perhaps best-regarded novel. (It is taught in schools and has recently been turned into a Broadway show.)
When a reclusive Mississippi timber tycoon hangs himself from a sycamore on the edge of his estate, his handwritten will leaves the bulk of his fortune not to his two adult children, but to his black housekeeper. Seth Hubbard loathed lawyers.
The FirmThe Firm is Grisham's second novel, and first of his works to become a bestseller. It inspired a movie adaptation starring Tom Cruise and is probably his best-known book.

Grisham's first bestseller, The Firm, sold more than seven million copies. The book was adapted into a 1993 feature film of the same name, starring Tom Cruise, and a 2012 TV series which continues the story ten years after the events of the film and novel.
Grisham agreed that studios “would rather spend the big money on 'Superman' or 'Spider Man 5' or whatever.” “As we know, there are so few good adult dramas being made, you can't find one,” he said. He acknowledged it's especially confusing considering how well the adaptations of his novels did at the box office.
Good news for rare-book collectors! A first-edition copy of best-selling author John Grisham's first book is worth more than $4,000.
